Katy, TX – The Katy Family YMCA and The Fellowship at Cinco Ranch will hold their 8th annual Turkey Dash on Thanksgiving morning, November 25, 2010. The race has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years to become the largest 5K west of the Galleria. Last year over 3,000 participants gathered on race morning to kick off their Holiday season by participating in the Turkey Dash.
With 3 races to choose from, there’s something for everyone; a Kids Race beginning at 7:30am, a 5K at 8:00am and a Family Walk/Run which starts at 9:00am. All races start and finish at the Katy YMCA located at the corner of Westheimer Parkway and Peek Rd, one block off the Grand Parkway in Cinco Ranch.
The event was the brainchild of leaders from the Y and the church wishing to organize an activity to bring the community together. In 2008 a competitive Kids Race was added to the day’s agenda which has been very popular. Now the Turkey Dash is a well recognized, community Holiday kick off celebration which even attracts residents of surrounding towns such as Bellville, Sealy as well as all parts of West Houston.
Race day highlights include awards in age categories for the Kids Race and 5K, a post race party featuring the Erin Eder band, complimentary snacks, Kids Fun Zone area, door prizes, photos with a turkey mascot, Santa and more!
Beth Strand, race coordinator says, “We have seen family participation grow over the past few years. Multiple generations and extended families are choosing to come out to cheer each other on, participate as a group in the family walk and to enjoy the festive atmosphere of the day. Families creating memories is really what the Turkey Dash is all about.”
Proceeds benefit the YMCA Partners Campaign which provides program scholarships for families who otherwise could not afford them. In 2009 the Turkey Dash raised over $60,000 for needy Katy area residents. Title sponsors include Reliant Energy, KBR and Dr. Bruscia’s Family Foot & Ankle Wellness Center.
