Contractor Reaches Out to Handicapped Widow; Family of Six Receives New House Donation

By  |

Michael Brown, owner of Christian Contracting in Kingwood, Texas and founder of Hammers of Compassion is reaching out to a 74 year old handicapped widow 140 miles away in Waelder, Texas to replace her condemned home with a new one.

Mr. Brown learned of Ms. Julia Reyes’ housing problem while on a Youth Mission trip to Waelder, Texas with his church this summer. “After one of the men on the mission trip told me about Ms. Reyes’ living conditions I had to return to see if I could help her. My mother is a widow in Mobile, Alabama and I would hope someone would do the same for her”, said Mr. Brown. Ms. Reyes lives with her daughter and four of her grandchildren in a two bedroom, one bathroom house not much larger then an average two car garage with no air conditioning. There is a crack in the bottom of their fiberglass bathtub that has been leaking water for years. The family has tried to seal the bathtub by stuffing clothing in the crack.

The water from the bathtub has drained underneath the house for some time, causing the foundation to collapse. The bathtub and toilet are about to fall through the rotten plywood floor. Mold from the moisture caused by standing water under the house has covered both the bath-room walls & ceiling and most of the two bedrooms. The tin roof is barely standing because termites and rotten rafters have weakened the roof structure.

Hammers of Compassion (HOC), a non-proof group of compassionate volunteers will build a new house for Ms. Reyes and her family. HOC is looking for compassionate community business leaders to donate building materials, furniture and appliances to this worthy cause. Volunteers with or without building craft trade skills are also welcome to help in the construction of the house. The Reyes family will be relocated to temporary housing while their house is being built.

“Due to the health risks the Reyes family is exposed to, our goal is to start building by August 31”, said Mr. Brown. If you would like to help the Reyes family you can contact Michael Brown with Hammers of Compassion at 832.687.3481 or visit their web site at www.hammersofcompassion.org. Monetary donations can be given at any Compass Bank location under Hammers of Compassion project: Reyes.
