Clay’s Mortuary and Cremation: Finding Solace in Death

By  |

You might say that mortuaries run though Errol Clay’s blood, and you wouldn’t be far off. The owner of Clay’s Mortuary and Cremation in Cinco Ranch, Clay has wanted to be a funeral director since he was a child. “My father was a pastor and I used to tag along with him to funeral services. In my eyes, funeral directors wore nice suits and drove nice cars, and they got to work with people without preaching to them. It was the perfect job,” Clay said.

Clay Family

Being a preacher’s kid, Clay had no fear of death. In fact, while the rest of us were playing house or school, he was playing funeral, with his friends serving as the dead bodies. He laughed as he told the story, but then became serious. “I feel like God has wired me and called me to do this. People are blessed, encouraged, and inspired by our process.”

Clay’s offers custom, five-star funerals; traditional and graveside services; children’s services; memorials; cremations and life celebrations; pre-arrangement funerals; in-home or office funerals; domestic and foreign shipping; pastoral/spiritual advising; and repast guidance. They call their custom service the “Clay Way.” Clay explained, “Every family is different so we customize everything. If the deceased’s favorite color was purple, we decorate  with purple, and we’re not going to put a suit on someone who never wore one.”

Mindful of the costs of funeral services nowadays, Clay’s provides the option of a rental casket that is used for the funeral before a cremation. Cremations themselves are must less costly than funerals, so more families are requesting that service than in the past. As a result, custom funerals no longer have to leave families financially strapped.

This unique mortuary brings something special, since Clay is also a pastor (see our Pastor Profile, this issue) who has faced much loss in his personal life. He and his wife have been married 20 years and have had 13 miscarriages. In addition, they’ve lost both sets of parents. Grieving families find comfort from Clay’s empathy and compassion, and Pastor Clay’s training makes him the perfect person with which to talk through grief, calm nerves, and pray with those left behind.
